Will Montgomery (2013). "Machines for Living”

About the Text

In Amsterdam, there is the Studio for Electro-Instrumental Music, also called STEIM.

A place where it’s all about music from an art and technical perspective, where designers come together to invent new ways of playing and performing music.

The STEIM has its own research and experimentation efforts and is committed finding new uses for technology.

Early works

The problem with the first computer music work was, that there was a person behind a laptop without performing, while there was something produced that was a cool performance on its own. The artist and the art didn’t match in the sense of performing, there was no unity.

This was a problem to tackle.
